2010 Philippine's Vice Presidentiables: Bayani Fernando

Bayani Fernando was born in San Juan, Rizal on July 25, 1946 and He is the former Secretary of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). He finished college with a degree on Mechanical Engineering at the Mapua Institute of Technology.

A professional Mechanical Engineer. He is the founder of the BF GROUP OF COMPANIES, dealing with construction, steel, manufacturing and real estate. He has built the country’s tallest building, shopping malls, industrial and residential subdivisions and facilities. He is a former Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways.

He was a three-term City Mayor of Marikina, who transformed the former municipality into one of the best-managed cities and a paradigm of responsive and effective governance. During his incumbency, Marikina City was accorded 55 citations and distinctions



As Chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Metropolitan Manila has been dramatically changing into a livable metropolis. With his exceptional administrative skills and leadership qualities that have now become the yardstick of performance, he continues to prove himself as an agent of positive change. This earned him the moniker “Mr. Governance”.

For his outstanding work, he was conferred the Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, Ateneo de Cagayan, The Outstanding Filipino(TOFIL) Award for Government Service, the H.R Reyes Academic Medallion of Honor, Central Colleges of the Philippines and Doctor of the Public Administration, Honoris Causa by the polytechnic University of the Philippines.

He speaks and deals with people from all walks of life with amiable bearing of a real gentleman but decides and acts with a firm political will, uncompromising with his principles. He has announced his intention to run for President of the Philippines in the 2010 election. However, after talks with Richard Gordon, he agreed to slide as Vice President for Gordon's newly-established party, Bagumbayan, their tandem dubbed as the Transformers.

Mayor of Marikina City

Fernando first ran for public office in 1992, becoming mayor of Marikina City. His administration as mayor is credited with several cleanliness and beautification projects, and his term saw the transformation of Marikina from a 4th class municipality to a model Philippine city. He was re-elected mayor twice, serving until 2001. He was succeeded by his wife, Ma. Lourdes C. Fernando.

MMDA Chairman

In 2002, he was appointed chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Among the more prominent projects undertaken by the MMDA during Fernando's administration is the establishment of the Gwapotel Inn, which has become popular among transients due to affordable lodging.

Fernando on November 8, 2008, was named the GMA-7’s 2008 “Celebrity Duets” 2nd season grand champion. He sang duets with Pokwang and Yoyoy Villame.

He resigned to pursue his candidacy for Vice-President with Richard Gordon. He was succeeded by Oscar Inocentes.

Presidential campaign

On January 4, 2008, Fernando announced that he would be running for the presidency in the 2010 elections. Fernando has hinted that he has gathered the funds and logistics required for a nationwide campaign, and is intent on running for the presidency with or without the support of his party, Lakas-CMD. As of September 16, 2009, Lakas-CMD has chosen Gilbert “Gibo” C. Teodoro to represent their party for the presidency. Fernando "reiterated that he is keeping his options open and may possibly run as an independent candidate or bolt out of the party."

After talks with Richard Gordon, he has agreed to slide to Vice-President under Richard Gordon's party. They are now currently official candidates.
